Truss the Process

GPR 3 Brady 6

In a week where a humble lettuce proved itself a worthy adversary for the PM herself, a week where salad has reigned supreme, so it fell to us to carry the torch on a sodden Sunday morning, to continue the legacy of our flagbearers. But we didn’t. This game is no FIFA - you can’t just save scum your way to the Middlesex County FA Sunday Junior Trophy - real life hits you hard.

It’s rarely a ringing endorsement when the lads are begging the ref to call the game off over ‘torrential rainfall’, and several of the squad have to pull out through injury the night before. So it proved today as we were beaten by a fledgling Brady FC who had some class link up play and a clinical touch that caught us out completely in the first half. They got through the defence early doors and we soon went 4-0 down quicker than anyone could say, “f*cking hell lads, we’re 4-0 down”.

But it’s not about how you start, it’s how you finish, and if they’d sportingly agreed to next goal wins it would have been neck and neck until their sixth in the 85th minute. But we won our first half of football today, so trust the process? A new look up front saw some proper battling down the wings, and Rory pounced on the rebound to give us something to shout about. He was later brought down inside the penalty area early into the second half, and let’s just say it’s fortunate that VAR isn’t used in cup ties. Nevertheless, Pete fired past the keeper, before heading a second right into the top bins following an absolute peach of a corner.

There were peaches all round today as Baywatch enthusiast Stefan made his debut as captain. Some of the lads felt misled, having been promised that they were going to be meeting a blond bombshell with blue eyes and a tight fitting shirt. Elsewhere, Chris and Ben both gave good first accounts of themselves. The former provided an assist - the latter should have scored an easy tap-in… had Pete not been a greedy bastard and gone for goal himself. Stat-padding aside, today saw easily some of the best football we played all season and we’ll definitely be ringing up Brady for a pre-season friendly next year: they were class on and off the pitch - best of luck for the season.

MOTM 🏆 = Pete gets the nod for his brace, rewarding the manager’s faith in wanting a signature Sunday league striker for today’s game. Just remember mate, focus on points, not pies.

DOTD 💩 = We have to give it to the first twenty minutes. No individual performance could beat that.
